Why drainage is worth taking seriously
Water showing up inside a house often turns out to be a drainage problem rather than a roofing one. That is worth knowing, because drainage is a great deal cheaper to put right than a roof.
When gutters overflow or a downspout dumps water against the house, three things tend to follow. Water backs up under the shingle edge and rots the fascia the gutters hang from. Water runs down the wall and gets behind siding. Water pools at the foundation, which is the expensive one.
Finding that early is worth a lot. It is also the kind of thing that is easy to miss from the ground, because a gutter only overflows while it is actually raining hard.
What seamless gutter actually means
Sectional gutter comes in lengths and is joined together on the house. Every joint is a seam, every seam is sealed, and every seal eventually fails. On a long run you can end up with several of them.
Seamless gutter is formed on site from a continuous coil, cut to the exact length of the run. The only joints are at corners and at the downspout outlets, which is far fewer places for a split to start. That is the practical difference, and it is the reason most new gutter work is done this way.
Sizing and capacity
Most homes here run five inch gutter, and for most roofs that is the right size. Six inch gutter moves noticeably more water, and it is worth considering on a large roof, on a steep roof that sheds fast, or on a house where the existing gutters visibly overflow in heavy rain even when they are clean.
Downspout sizing and placement matter as much as the gutter itself. A correctly sized gutter feeding an undersized downspout still backs up. We look at the whole run rather than just the trough.
Gutter guards
Guards keep leaves and debris out of the trough so it keeps draining. They are most worth it on houses with mature trees close to the roofline, especially anything that drops needles or seed pods.
We will be straight with you about this. Guards reduce cleaning, they do not eliminate it, and no guard we would install makes a gutter maintenance free. Anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. If you have no trees near the house, you may well be better off spending the money elsewhere.
Repairs and re-hanging
Not every gutter problem needs new gutter.
Re-hanging fixes gutter that has pulled away from the fascia or lost its pitch. Gutter needs a slight fall toward the downspout, and when hangers loosen or fascia softens, the run goes flat or backwards and water sits in it.
Sealing and joint repair handles leaks at corners and outlets on otherwise sound gutter.
Downspout and drainage work moves the water away from the house. Sometimes the gutter is fine and the problem is that the downspout discharges two feet from the foundation.
If the fascia behind the gutter has rotted, that has to be dealt with first, because new gutter fastened to soft wood will pull away again. We check the fascia during the inspection and show you what we find.
What happens on the day
Seamless gutter is formed at your house, which changes how the day runs compared with most exterior work. The coil and the forming machine come with us, each run is measured and cut on site, and the old gutter comes down the same day the new one goes up.
Before any of that we will have looked at the fascia behind the existing gutter, because new gutter fastened to soft wood will pull away again. If the fascia needs work, that is in the written estimate rather than discovered halfway through.
At the end we check that water actually leaves where it should. A gutter that looks right and still pools at one end has not been finished.
The crew that measures your runs installs them
Stellar Renovations is locally owned and based in Louisville, and we are licensed and insured. The person who measured your runs is on the crew that installs them, so nothing is lost between the quote and the day.
We look at gutters during roof and storm inspections as well. Dented aluminum after hail is one of the clearer signs that the roof took the same hit.
Gutter service area
We install and repair gutters across the same fifteen counties we roof in, on both sides of the Ohio River. That is the Louisville metro out to Bardstown and Elizabethtown, and the Southern Indiana counties from Jeffersonville across to Corydon and up to Scottsburg. In Kentucky that is Jefferson, Oldham, Bullitt, Shelby, Spencer, Nelson, Hardin, Meade, Henry, and Trimble counties, and in Indiana, Clark, Floyd, Harrison, Scott, and Washington. If your county is not on that list, call and ask.
