Do you need a repair or a replacement?
This is the first question most homeowners ask, and it is the right one. The honest answer is that it depends on three things, and none of them can be judged from the driveway.
Age. How long an asphalt roof lasts depends on the grade of shingle, the quality of the original install, and how well the attic is ventilated, so age on its own does not decide it. What age does tell you is how to read the other two. Storm damage in one area of a relatively young roof is usually a repair. Granule loss across every slope on an old one usually is not.
How far the damage spreads. Missing shingles on one plane after a windstorm is a contained problem. Curling, cupping, or bald patches across several slopes means the roof is wearing out as a whole, and patching one section buys very little time.
The decking underneath. This is the one nobody sees. If water has been getting in long enough to soften the plywood, new shingles laid over bad decking will not solve anything. The decking gets checked during the inspection, and you see photographs of whatever turns up.
A repair you are happy with, and a call from you again in four years, is a good result for both of us.
What a roof repair covers
Repairs are the right answer more often than people expect. Common ones include replacing shingles lost to wind, sealing around a chimney or vent pipe where flashing has failed, fixing a valley where two roof planes meet and water concentrates, and tracking down a leak that shows up on a ceiling several feet from where it actually enters.
That last one matters. Water runs along rafters before it drops, so the stain on your ceiling is rarely under the hole. Finding the real entry point is most of the work.
What a roof replacement covers
A full replacement means tearing off the old material down to the deck, inspecting and replacing any rotted sheathing, installing new underlayment and ice and water barrier in the valleys and along the eaves, then installing new shingles, flashing, and ridge ventilation.
Most single family homes in Louisville are a one to two day job once materials are on site. Weather and roof complexity are the two things that change that. A simple gable roof goes faster than a cut up roof with multiple dormers, valleys, and chimneys.
Roofing materials we install
Asphalt shingles cover the large majority of homes in this market, and there are real differences between the grades.
Three tab shingles are the lowest upfront cost and carry the shortest warranty. They make sense on a tight budget or a rental property.
Architectural shingles are the standard choice for most Louisville homes. They handle wind better than three tab, they last longer, and they look considerably better from the street.
Impact resistant Class 4 shingles cost more upfront and are worth considering if you have been through hail more than once. Some Kentucky insurers offer a premium discount for Class 4 material, so it is worth asking your agent what yours does before you decide.
Which grade fits your roof and your budget is part of the estimate conversation, and the most expensive option is not the default answer.
What a new roof costs in Louisville
Published market figures for the Louisville metro in 2026 put a full replacement on a standard single family home somewhere between $8,500 and $14,000. By material, installed, the published ranges run roughly $4.50 to $6.00 per square foot for three tab, $6.00 to $9.00 for architectural, and $8.00 to $12.00 for impact resistant Class 4.
Those are published market estimates, not our quote. Your actual price depends on roof size, pitch, how many layers have to come off, and the condition of the decking underneath. We put our number in writing after we have looked at your roof, and that written estimate is the only figure that counts.
These ranges are published here because a homeowner deserves to walk into the conversation with some idea of the territory.
From the first call to the final check
- You call or send the form. Tell us the symptom and your address. We schedule the inspection as fast as we can get to you.
- We inspect, free. We get on the roof, photograph the condition, and check the decking and flashing, not just the shingles.
- You see the photos. We show you what we found before we quote anything, so you can judge the roof for yourself.
- You get it in writing. A written estimate with the full scope and the price. No same day only discounts, no pressure to sign on the spot.
- We do the work. Scheduled, cleaned up after, and inspected at the end. The crew that quoted your job is the crew on your roof.
What comes with the estimate
Stellar Renovations is a locally owned roofing company based in Louisville. We are licensed and insured, and the crew that quotes your roof is the crew that works on it, so your questions get answered by someone who has actually been up there.
Every inspection ends the same way: photographs of your own roof and a written scope listing everything we propose to do. You see the condition before there is any conversation about price. If we find nothing wrong, we will tell you that, and you will not owe us anything.
